Zuma must account before Zondo

A press statement issued on 15 November 2020 by a coalition of organisations calling for former President Jacob Zuma to appear before the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture to provide transparent accountability regarding state capture and the influence of the Gupta family.

• A group of undersigned organisations expresses support for the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture, asserting that its findings and recommendations are essential for dismantling corrupt networks that have damaged democracy over the last ten years.
• The Zondo Commission originated from the 2016 'State of Capture' Report by former Public Protector Adv. Thuli Madonsela, which required then President Jacob Zuma to appoint a judge-led commission of inquiry within 30 days. Following a dismissed attempt by Zuma to set aside this action in the North Gauteng High Court, the Commission was established in January 2018.
• The signatories call for Jacob Zuma to appear before the Commission on November 16 and respond transparently to allegations concerning his role in assisting the Gupta family's business interests, the appointment and dismissal of Cabinet Ministers, the Russian nuclear deal, and the management of senior officials in government departments or state-owned enterprises (SOEs).
