Preparation of Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) as a Catalyst for National Climate Change Mitigation Action

A briefing by the NewClimate Institute, conducted in cooperation with GIZ and the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), examines how the preparation of intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) has accelerated national climate change mitigation policy and capacity.

• The process of preparing intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) has acted as a catalyst for improving national climate change mitigation capacity and policy making prior to the formal adoption of the international climate agreement.
• Beyond the post-2020 ambition levels set in INDCs, the preparation process has increased the capacity and potential for mitigation actions for most countries in the period leading up to 2020.
