State of Climate Action 2022

The State of Climate Action 2022 report assesses progress across 40 indicators of systemwide transformation required to limit global warming to 1.5°C, finding that none of these indicators are currently on track to meet their 2030 targets.

• An assessment of 40 indicators of systems change reveals that none are on track to reach their 2030 targets. While 6 indicators are moving in the right direction at a promising but insufficient speed and 21 are moving in the right direction but well below the required pace, 5 indicators are moving in the wrong direction, and 8 lack sufficient data for evaluation.
• To meet 2030 targets, significant acceleration is needed in specific sectors: the phase-out of unabated coal in electricity generation must be six times faster than recent global rates, carbon intensity improvements in cement production must increase by more than a factor of 10, and the acceleration of reductions in the annual deforestation rate must be 2.5 times faster.
• Current national 2030 climate commitments, if fully implemented, would lead to warming of approximately 2.4°C to 2.8°C, indicating that the window to limit warming to 1.5°C is closing rapidly.
