As the climate crisis worsens, the warming projections are flatlining

Global warming projections for 2100 have remained stagnant since 2021, with current policies leading to a median estimate of 2.7°C of warming. While clean energy investments now double those for fossil fuels, record-high fossil fuel subsidies and funding for prolonging projects are preventing the steep emissions decline required by the Paris Agreement. The briefing emphasizes that seven large emitters and the COP Troika countries, responsible for 63% of 2022 global emissions, must set more ambitious 2030 and 2035 targets to align with 1.5°C.

• Global warming projections for the year 2100 have not improved since 2021, with current policies placing the world on a trajectory toward a median warming of 2.7°C. There is a 33% probability that warming will reach 3.0°C or higher and a 10% probability it will reach 3.6°C or higher.
• Progress in renewable energy and electric vehicle deployment is being offset by continued fossil fuel support. Although clean energy investments are now twice as high as those for fossil fuels, fossil fuel subsidies are at record levels and funding for projects that prolong fossil fuel use quadrupled between 2021 and 2022.
• The election of Donald Trump as President could negatively impact temperature projections, potentially adding 0.04°C to the current policy estimate if policy rollbacks are limited to the US, or several tenths of a degree to the optimistic 1.9°C scenario if the US net zero target is permanently removed.
