Faster and cleaner decarbonisation in the power and transport sectors is happening

• Decarbonization within the power sector is progressing more quickly than previously predicted. This is evidenced by a reduction in coal use in the U.S. and the E.U., and the expectation that coal consumption in China will peak between 2016 and 2020.
• The growth of solar and wind capacity has significantly exceeded forecasts. This deployment, driven by technology maturation and policy, is occurring at rates that were not considered feasible ten years prior.
• In key economies, passenger vehicle fleets have become one-sixth less carbon-intense compared to 2005 levels. Additionally, the market penetration of electric drive vehicles (EDVs) is surpassing predictions and may serve as a primary driver for reducing light-duty vehicle emission intensities.
