Ten key short-term sectoral benchmarks to limit warming to 1.5°C

The NewClimate Institute identifies ten critical short-term sectoral benchmarks for the period 2020–2025 necessary to maintain a greenhouse gas emission pathway consistent with the 1.5°C temperature goal of the Paris Agreement.

• To limit warming to 1.5°C, the NewClimate Institute proposes ten specific benchmarks across energy, transport, buildings, industry, and land use. These include maintaining current renewable energy growth to reach a 100% share by 2050, halting new coal power plants while reducing existing coal fleet emissions by 30% by 2025, and ensuring all new buildings are fossil-free and near-zero energy by 2020.
• Additional benchmarks for a 1.5°C-consistent pathway include selling the last fossil fuel passenger car between 2035 and 2050, increasing building renovation rates from under 1% in 2015 to 5% by 2020, and stopping net deforestation by 2025 while reducing forestry and land use emissions to 95% below 2010 levels by 2030.
• The report states that achieving these benchmarks requires large-scale, high-speed sector transformations and the immediate introduction of zero-carbon technologies rather than marginal efficiency gains. These benchmarks are intended to assist in designing policy options consistent with the Paris Agreement.
