Faster and Cleaner 2: It only takes a few countries to kick-start energy

The report examines the progress of decarbonisation across three global energy sectors. It highlights the rapid growth of wind and solar power, the emerging scale of electric vehicle sales, and the relative lag in the buildings sector despite available technological solutions.

• The power sector experienced significant growth in renewable capacity between 2006 and 2015, with wind power increasing by 600 percent and solar energy by 3500 percent. Solar PV is expected to be the most affordable energy generation source in most countries by 2030.
• The transport sector is seeing a rise in electric drive vehicle production, with sales surpassing one million in 2016 and exceeding previous projections. Success in this sector is often driven by policy packages focusing on takeup targets, behavioural change campaigns, R&D, and infrastructure investment.
• The buildings sector is lagging behind power and transport in decarbonisation, despite the existence of proven zero-carbon building technologies. Progress could be accelerated through building codes for new constructions and innovative financial mechanisms for retrofitting.
