1,5°C - was Deutschland tun muss

This briefing by the NewClimate Institute analyzes potential emission reduction paths for Germany to align with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement, concluding that current government targets are insufficient.

• The current climate protection goals of the German federal government are not compatible with a 1.5°C limit. Even with unrealistic assumptions regarding the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, the goals are insufficient. If Germany follows its current path, it will emit between 20% and 130% more greenhouse gases than allowed for 1.5°C by the middle of the century. The government's 'Climate Action Plan 2050' goal of 'broad greenhouse gas neutrality by the middle of the century' is inadequate on its own; the critical factor is the speed of emission reductions between 2020 and 2040.
• To be indisputably compatible with the 1.5°C limit and meet its global responsibility, Germany must reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2030. In scenarios that are only partially compatible with 1.5°C, emissions must drop by at least 70% by 2030 and at least 85% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. However, when considering Germany's historical emissions and responsibility, its allocated greenhouse gas budget has already been exhausted.
• Failure to meet the 2020 climate target of a 40% emission reduction has jeopardized the 1.5°C goal. The resulting additional emissions account for approximately 10% of Germany's 1.5°C budget for the period from 2010 to 2050. To avoid exceeding its budget, Germany must now implement a steeper reduction path to compensate for these emissions.
