Developing 2°C-compatible investment criteria

The NewClimate Institute report examines the creation of investment criteria to align financial assets, particularly those managed by development and climate finance organisations, with the goal of limiting global temperature increase to below 2°C.

• The report aims to establish a foundation for a long-term, consensus-based process to develop investment criteria that ensure financial investments in projects and physical assets are compatible with the goal of limiting global temperature increase to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels.
• Limiting global temperature increase to 2°C requires a significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to zero this century, necessitating a shift of capital from high-carbon to low-carbon investments and the mobilisation of capital for 2°C-compatible infrastructure, starting immediately due to the long lifespan of physical assets.
• While most international financial institutions use climate considerations—such as shadow carbon pricing, qualitative and quantitative benchmarks, and positive or negative lists—these current methods do not link to the 2°C limit, creating a need for specific 2°C investment criteria to guide investors and improve accountability and risk understanding.
