Climate Investment in the Food and Agriculture Sector in Latin America: The Cases

This report examines the alignment of the food and agriculture sector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) with the Paris Agreement, highlighting the need to redirect investment from conventional agribusiness toward innovative, low-emission alternatives such as biochar and alternative proteins.

• Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) emissions represent 46% of total emissions in Latin America, primarily driven by livestock and commodity agriculture.
• While significant investment enters the region, only a small portion is directed toward sustainable and climate-friendly alternatives. The report suggests that redirecting foreign capital inflows from conventional activities to innovative solutions would align with international guidance for Paris Agreement compatibility.
• To accelerate the adoption of investment opportunities like alternative proteins and biochar, the report recommends policy support through financial incentives for start-ups, research and innovation in production chains, and the stimulation of consumer demand.
