• The proposed salt works will be located on land parcel L.R. No. 13536 in the Musumarini area of Adu Ward, Marereni Sub-Location, Fundi Issa Location, Magarini Sub-County, Kilifi County. The total land area is 1,021.9 hectares, with the salt works occupying approximately 753.8 hectares.
• Under Legal Notice No. 150 of 19 August 2016, which amended the Environmental Management and Coordination Act, 1999, salt firms are classified as high risk projects and are required to submit an environmental impact assessment study report.
• The EIA process will include the collection of baseline data, stakeholder participation, identification of potential positive and negative impacts, proposal of mitigation measures, and the development of an Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
• Stakeholder consultation will be conducted through three public barazas, questionnaire surveys, focused group discussions, and site visits and observations.
• The EIA study will review a wide range of Kenyan national legislation, including the Constitution of Kenya 2010, the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act (EMCA) 1999, the Mining Act 2016, and the Water Act 2016, among others.
• The project will be evaluated against international treaties and conventions to which Kenya is a signatory, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (1992) and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (1994).
• The EIA study report will include an analysis of the technology and processes used, alternative technologies available, waste generation and handling, and an economic and social analysis of the project.
• The project proponent is Al-Sherman Limited, a private company incorporated in the Republic of Kenya with certificate of incorporation number C 30942 dated 18 December 1985.
