TEEPSA Diep Water Oranje Kom Suid WATTER AKSIE KAN EK NEEM?

This fact sheet, published by Natural Justice in February 2025, provides information and guidance for the public to comment on the draft Scoping Report for TotalEnergies EP SA S.A.S (TEEPSA) exploration drilling in the southern area of license block Diep Water Oranje Kom (DWOB).

• TEEPSA plans to conduct additional exploration drilling in a 15,000 km2 area in the southern part of the DWOB license block, located approximately 211 km from Saldanha.
• The proposed drilling activities include up to 7 exploration and other wells, with each well and its related activities estimated to take 3 to 4 months.
• The project will utilize a Deepwater Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU), specifically either a drillship or a semi-submersible unit, supported by up to three support vessels and helicopter transport from Cape Town.
• Logistical bases for the project will be established at existing ports in Cape Town, Saldanha Bay, or Luderitz.
• Potential environmental impacts include changes to seawater quality and increased noise, which may cause pelagic fish (such as tuna, billfish, and sharks) and whales (including sperm and humpback whales) to move out of the drilling area or be injured.
• The project may impact fishing livelihoods; between 2017 and 2019, an annual average of 149 fishing lines in the DWOB area yielded 191 tons of large pelagic species like tuna and swordfish.
• The project area is considered highly sensitive by indigenous people and small-scale fishers due to their spiritual and cultural connection to the ocean, which is viewed as a cultural network requiring ancestral blessing for development.
• The public deadline to submit comments on the draft Scoping Report is 19 February 2025.
