New gas exploration project in Welkom, Virginia, Hennenman and Odendaalsrus

• Motuoane Energy (Pty) Ltd applied for Exploration Right ER386 in 2024 to search for gas fields in the Free State. The Petroleum Agency South Africa (PASA) has accepted the application, though it has not yet been approved. The proposed exploration area covers 58,000 hectares across various farms near Welkom, Virginia, Hennenman, and Odendaalsrus.
• Environmental Impact Management Services (EIMS) has produced a draft Scoping Report for the project. Following a public participation process, a final Scoping Report will be submitted to the Department of Mineral Resources for Environmental Authorisation, with public comments due by 18 June 2025.
