Mighty Earth and the Coronavirus – A Letter from CEO Glenn Hurowitz

CEO Glenn Hurowitz asserts that destructive practices like forest clearing by agribusiness and the illegal wildlife trade increase human contact with wild animals, fueling pandemics. He advocates for increased conservation funding and the removal of deforestation links in food supply chains. Additionally, he criticizes the US Senate stimulus package for providing approximately $50 billion in airline bailouts without requiring carbon neutrality, arguing that crisis funding should not subsidize polluters or lock in destructive business models.

• The author links the emergence of pandemics to destructive environmental practices, specifically citing agribusiness forest clearing and the illegal wildlife trade as drivers that bring humans into contact with new diseases.
• The document suggests that the coronavirus may have originated from a bat via a pangolin, and notes that Ebola and AIDS likely resulted from bushmeat consumption linked to rainforest displacement for plantations.
• The author criticizes the US Senate stimulus package for including approximately $50 billion in loans and giveaways for airlines without requiring carbon neutrality, contrasting this with the 2009 auto bailout which mandated fuel efficiency increases.
