Time to Remind EU Politicians: We Love Forests!

Mighty Earth calls on EU politicians to uphold the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), warning that political pressure from the European Peoples Party (EPP) and industry actors threatens a law that could save 8 million hectares of forest and prevent 2.7 tonnes of net CO2 emissions over ten years.

• Global deforestation reached record highs in 2024, primarily driven by fires and agriculture, specifically the expansion of commodities for international markets such as soy, rubber, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and cattle.
• The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), signed into law in June 2023, aims to decouple European consumer habits from global forest destruction, though its implementation has already been delayed by one year following pressure from industry actors, some producer countries, and EU politicians.
• Implementation of the EUDR is projected to prevent 2.7 tonnes of net CO2 emissions and save 8 million hectares of forest—an area comparable in size to Austria—over the next decade.
• Mighty Earth claims that members of the European Peoples Party (EPP) and right-wing parties have worked to undermine the EUDR since the June 2024 Parliament elections, despite significant investments already made by companies and governments to establish traceability and due diligence systems.
