• Audit criteria must be precise, observable, and contextual, incorporating stakeholder input to address specific risks such as indigenous and collective data sovereignty, fair labor practices (including protection from algorithmic management), and environmental impacts like greenhouse gas emissions and e-waste.
• To ensure reliability, auditors must be independent and qualified, with guaranteed access to comprehensive evidence—such as model cards and data sheets—and the results of these audits should be made public via open-access journals or public repositories to ensure accountability.
• The auditing methodology should move beyond relying on provided documentation to include active performance testing, documentary analysis, testimonial evidence, and field visits to capture long-term systemic repercussions.
