IISD’s State of Sustainability Initiatives

The IISD's State of Sustainability Initiatives (SSI) provides research and strategic advice to improve voluntary sustainability standards (VSSs) and promote sustainable production, consumption, and trade. Its strategy focuses on improving VSS design, increasing synergies between standards and policy, and enhancing transparency for small-scale farmers and MSMEs. The program offers services including benchmarking, policy formulation, and implementation support through pilots and training.

• The State of Sustainability Initiatives (SSI) focuses on three primary goals: encouraging producers to adopt practices that mitigate risks and have positive impacts via VSSs, promoting global sustainable consumption by companies and governments, and improving market access and remuneration for small-scale farmers and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
• The SSI's operational strategy consists of three components: improving VSS design and practices, increasing synergies between VSSs and policy action at national, regional, and multilateral levels, and enhancing the transparency and accountability of sourcing practices and terms for MSMEs and small-scale farmers.
