Leveraging Sustainable Markets for Poverty Reduction and Sustainable Development

The IISD is implementing a project to prevent the marginalization of poor producers in sustainable agriculture markets. By providing data and capacity building on over 400 Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSSs), the initiative aims to help less-developed countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America strategically enter value-added markets to reduce poverty and meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

• Sustainable agricultural commodities are increasingly entering mainstream markets, with sustainable production reaching 20 per cent of global palm oil and 30 per cent of global cocoa production, driven largely by consumer preferences.
• Stakeholders in less-developed countries struggle to utilize the more than 400 existing Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSSs) due to a lack of sufficient information regarding their performance, utility, and best practices.
• The IISD project intends to support six pilot countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America through targeted data collection, analysis, and the creation of a digital data platform to improve market access and poverty reduction.
