Links Between Environment and Security
Summary
The ENVSEC Initiative, a partnership between the OSCE, UNEP, and UNDP, investigates how environmental factors and natural resource management intersect with security in South Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The project aims to provide regionally-appropriate definitions of environment-security links, map risks and opportunities, and promote sustainable environmental cooperation as a means of peace-building and regional integration.
Key insights
- The ENVSEC Initiative aims to achieve four primary goals: establishing regionally-appropriate definitions of environment-security links, mapping these risks and opportunities in a final report and website, presenting conclusions at the May 2003 "Environment for Europe" Ministerial in Kiev, and mobilizing resources for follow-up activities.
