YCLSF Host Organization Guide

The YCLSF Host Organization Guide, published by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in 2001, provides operational instructions for organizations hosting interns under the Young Canadian Leaders for a Sustainable Future project. The project is part of the Government of Canada's Youth International Internship Program (YIIP), designed to provide unemployed or underemployed Canadian youth up to age 30 with their first paid international career experience in sustainable development.

• The Young Canadian Leaders for a Sustainable Future (YCLSF) project is funded by the Youth International Internship Program (YIIP), a component of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy introduced in February 1997. Funding is provided through the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), the Canadian International Development Agency, and Human Resource Development Canada.
• YIIP internships are intended for unemployed or underemployed Canadian youth up to 30 years of age to provide their first paid international work experience. These placements cannot be used for study or credit programs, such as cooperative programs or international MAs, and cannot take place within the Canadian federal government, including embassies and consulates.
• The YCLSF project aims to build capacity in young Canadians to address global issues regarding the environment, economy, and human well-being. Specific objectives include providing experience with leading sustainable development organizations, offering advanced training in areas such as climate change, energy, trade, and natural resource management, and enhancing the use of information technology for research and communication.
• Host organizations have several mandatory responsibilities, including providing a qualified supervisor, assisting with accommodations, providing a terms of reference, and submitting mid-term and final reports to IISD. They are also expected to complete evaluation forms provided by IISD and the funders.
• IISD provides a two-week training program for interns prior to their overseas departure. This orientation covers sustainable development issues—including climate change and natural resource management—and devotes approximately half of its time to improving Internet communication skills, such as HTML coding, site design, and search techniques.
• Safety and security protocols require all interns to be registered in the Registry of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) to facilitate emergency contact through Canadian missions. In the event of a medical emergency, interns are covered by a comprehensive medical insurance plan, primarily through Compass International, with specific exceptions for those placed in the United States, Mexico, or Vietnam.
