Watershed Indicators

• Effective planning in watersheds is often hindered by a combination of multifaceted issues, including fragmented jurisdictions, transboundary challenges, poor stakeholder communication, and data that is either incomplete or inaccessible.
• Watershed indicator systems that track environmental, social, and economic measures can serve as a shared reference point for diverse stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, and agricultural groups, which fosters a common understanding of priorities and reduces the duplication of efforts.
• In 2005, IISD, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Lake Balaton Development Coordination Agency (LBDCA) created a system for the Lake Balaton Region in Hungary. This system tracked ecological indicators such as greenhouse gas emissions, phosphorus loading to Lake Balaton, fish species, and land use, alongside social indicators like life expectancy and poverty levels, and economic indicators such as unemployment and tourism.
• IISD partnered with the United Way of Winnipeg to create 'Peg,' a community indicator system for Winnipeg, Canada. This system measures well-being and sustainability across eight themes: economy, natural environment, built environment, governance, social vitality, education and learning, health, and basic needs.
