Water Retention

A fact sheet by the International Institute for Sustainable Development detailing the economic and operational benefits of water retention projects for livestock farm owners and their neighbors in the Seine Rat Roseau Watershed District.

• Analysis of eight water retention projects in the Seine, Rat, and Roseau watersheds in 2022 indicates that every dollar invested in these projects generates $3 in co-benefits for livestock farm operations, which includes the prevention of flood-related damage to local infrastructure. All monetary values are cited in Canadian Dollars (CAD).
• Water retention projects provide multiple operational benefits during both wet and dry years, including extended grazing periods, improved downstream water quality, reduced farm stress, improved machinery and livestock crossing through berms, and lower costs for hauling water for livestock.
• The Seine Rat Roseau Watershed District offers a Water Retention program that provides financial and technical support, including annual land payments of $15 to $30 per acre, maintenance support over 10 years, and funding covering 80% to 100% of upfront costs.
