El Potencial de los Mercados Sostenibles para la Reducción de la Pobreza y el Desarrollo Sostenible

The IISD is implementing a project to address the marginalization of poor producers in sustainable markets. While sustainable agricultural production is growing—reaching 20% of global palm oil and 30% of cocoa—production remains concentrated in advanced, export-oriented economies. To counter this, the IISD's Sustainability Standards Initiative (SSI) provides data, digital platforms, and advisory services to help least developed countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America strategically access value-added sustainable markets and align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

• Sustainable agricultural production is increasing due to consumer preferences, with sustainable palm oil accounting for up to 20% and cocoa for 30% of global production.
• Despite the growth of over 400 Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS), production is concentrated in advanced, export-oriented economies, which marginalizes the poorest producers from accessing sustainable markets.
• Least developed countries lack sufficient information on the utility and performance of VSS, hindering their ability to design data-driven development strategies to reduce poverty.
• The IISD project aims to support least developed countries through innovative data analysis, a digital data platform, thematic reports on financing and SDGs, and personalized advisory services, initially focusing on six pilot countries across Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
