Seven Questions to Sustainability - Brochure (Vietnamese)

This brochure describes the development of a framework consisting of seven questions designed to assess the sustainability of mining and quarrying activities. Developed under the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) program, the framework aims to evaluate whether a project's overall contribution to sustainability is positive or negative over the long term.

• The Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development (MMSD) program was proposed globally in 1999 to develop ideas allowing the mining and quarrying industry to contribute to sustainable development. The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in Winnipeg implemented the MMSD project in North America in collaboration with the Mining Life-Cycle center at Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno.
• A group of 35 representatives from various stakeholders worked over eight months to create guidelines applicable to different stages of mining and quarrying operations, including exploration (1-10 years), field survey/design/construction (1-3 years), operation (2-100 years), temporary closure (weeks to years), formal closure and cessation (1-5 years), and post-closure (permanent).
• The result of these efforts is a reference framework centered on seven questions for sustainability, which are used to evaluate the contribution of mining and quarrying activities. These questions cover areas such as participation, human health and safety, environmental integrity, continuous summary and evaluation, economic viability, and institutional management and regulations.
