The MMSD North America project, implemented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development and the University of Nevada, developed a framework to transition the mining and minerals industry toward sustainability. The project produced several reports, including a set of 10 recommendations covering legacy issues, practical conditions, and long-term capacity building. It also introduced a 'Seven Questions' framework to assess the overall contribution of mining activities to long-term sustainable development.

• The MMSD North America project identified 10 recommendations to encourage the industry's transition to sustainable development. These are divided into 'Legacy Issues' (addressing past liabilities, preventing future mistakes, improving practical conditions, creating incentive paths, and improving conflict resolution), 'Long-term Issues' (legal capacity and adjusting financial/business models to meet environmental and social demands), and 'Capacity Building' (strengthening training and research systems, and reporting on MMSD results).
• A specific assessment framework consisting of 'Seven Questions' was developed to determine whether the overall contribution of mining and mineral activities to long-term sustainable development is positive or negative. This framework is intended for use in initial assessments, planning, funding, insurance, permitting, and both internal and external company audits.
• The MMSD North America project was implemented over 10 months through a collaborative process involving the North America Dialogue, which gathered 100 core participants and hundreds of others. Participants included a diverse range of stakeholders, such as company employees (from low to high level), mining-dependent communities, minorities, government, unions, NGOs, industry associations, and academics.
