The Measure of Progress

The IISD's Dashboard of Sustainability is a visual instrument panel that aggregates scientific data into four dials—economic, environmental, social, and institutional—to provide an easily understood gauge of a country's sustainability performance. Developed over two years at a cost of half-a-million dollars, the tool uses a color-coded system (green for sustainable, yellow for neutral, and red for urgent warning) to inform the general public, media, and policy-makers. The project is entering a second phase requiring US$250,000 in funding to enhance its internet functionality, create a state-of-the-art database, and refine its indicator sets. The Dashboard is scheduled to be unveiled at the World Summit for Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September 2002.

• The tool employs a color-coded indicator system where green represents the most sustainable conditions, yellow is neutral, and red signals an urgent warning of non-sustainability.
