Water

This fact sheet describes the International Institute for Sustainable Development's (IISD) approach to freshwater management, which integrates scientific research from the IISD Experimental Lakes Area with policy solutions for watershed management, bioeconomies, and international basin cooperation.

• IISD utilizes the Experimental Lakes Area in Northwestern Ontario as an outdoor laboratory to conduct whole-lake experiments on pollutants, which informs the organization's policy recommendations. Recent research at this site has focused on the impacts of climate change and estrogen on freshwater fish and lakes.
• The IISD promotes watershed bioeconomies by using sustainable harvesting of water-filtering plants to create clean energy, chemicals, plastics, and fertilizers. In the Lake Winnipeg watershed, this approach removed 15.7 tonnes of phosphorus and nitrogen and produced 30,000 GJ of heat energy in 2015 via pellets made from grasses and cattails.
• IISD provides international expertise in large-basin management and the water-energy-food nexus. In Pakistan, the organization analyzed water supply and demand scenarios for 2050 and assessed the vulnerability of the energy, health, and agriculture sectors to climate change to help the government improve resilience.
