Sustainable Investment Advisory Services

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) provides pro bono training, workshops, and technical advice to developing countries to ensure foreign investment supports fair and sustainable development.

• IISD's Sustainable Investment team consists of legal and policy experts who offer demand-driven technical advice, workshops, and training to developing countries. Their goal is to ensure that foreign investment contributes to sustainable and fair development through the design of investment laws and policies.
• The advisory services cover the entire investment life cycle, including promotion, facilitation, protection, dispute prevention, dispute management, and dispute resolution. These services span various sectors, such as mining, energy, tax, infrastructure, and agriculture and food systems.
• IISD provides specific technical support to government officials on several fronts: reforming investment treaties and contracts, aligning national instruments with international best practices, establishing national coordination mechanisms to prevent disputes, and adopting national investment laws and policies.
• IISD supports developing country officials in navigating and shaping global investment governance by tracking and participating in international reform initiatives. These include forums such as the WTO, OECD, UNCTAD, UNCITRAL, RCEP, and AfCFTA.
• Advisory services are offered pro bono to developing countries, although countries may be asked to cover reasonable expenses. In situations where funds are insufficient, priority is given to the least developed countries. IISD explicitly states it cannot represent governments in live dispute resolutions or contract negotiations.
