IISD Contributes to Inclusive and Resilient Food Security

This fact sheet outlines the International Institute for Sustainable Development's (IISD) initiatives to promote inclusive and resilient food security through advisory services, policy analysis, and collaborative research projects focusing on sustainable agriculture, gender equality, and trade.

• IISD provides advisory services to national governments in developing countries to guide sustainable agricultural investment. These services include legal advice on investment contracts and market intelligence regarding voluntary sustainability standards (VSSs) to protect land rights, secure rural livelihoods, and manage natural resources responsibly.
• In September 2019, IISD and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) released a new edition of 'Transforming Agriculture in Africa and Asia: What Are the Policy Options?'. This analytical framework examines agricultural economy performance across 117 countries over 45 years, with a detailed analysis of 15 countries' policy trajectories from 1970 to 2015.
• IISD is working to advance gender equality in agriculture through the promotion of the 'Enabling Voices, Demanding Rights' guide co-developed with Oxfam and the paper 'The Farmer and Her Husband'. Additionally, IISD supports the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliamentary Network, which met in Rwanda in April 2019.
• IISD is developing a policy brief to assist legislators with national seed legislation, focusing on international law options, alternatives to the WTO's Agreement on Trade-Related Intellectual Property Rights, and the protection of traditional knowledge and seed sharing.
• The Ceres2030 project, a collaboration between IISD, IFPRI, and Cornell University, aims to cost interventions to end hunger. Scheduled for a June 2020 launch in Berlin, the project includes a cost model to determine the public investment required to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2.
