Economies that Work for Sustainable Development

This brochure describes the activities and focus areas of the International Institute for Sustainable Development's (IISD) Economic Law and Policy Program, which provides technical expertise and policy advice to government officials in developing countries to foster equitable and environmentally sustainable economic development.

• The Economic Law and Policy Program focuses on specific areas of economic policy-making to achieve equitable growth and environmental sustainability, including investment, finance, trade, government procurement, and industrial policy.
• Developing countries require an annual investment of US$4.5 trillion in sectors covered by the Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, China requires US$460 billion in annual financing across its key green economic sectors.
• Public procurement is identified as a powerful market lever, with EU public authorities spending 18% of their GDP on such procurement.
• The program's work on investment for sustainable development focuses particularly on mining and agricultural investments in developing countries to help them attract investment that promotes sustainable growth and a transition to a sustainable economy.
