Communiqué

The communiqué from the 11th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF), held in October 2015 in Geneva, focuses on aligning mining practices with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the critical importance of integrated mine closure planning.

• The IGF emphasizes that integrating sustainable development into mining is challenging but essential for achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), positioning the Forum as a key entity for aligning industry policies with these global goals.
• There is a strong consensus among governments, civil society, academia, and the private sector that mine closure planning must begin at the start of the mine planning process and must integrate socio-economic considerations alongside environmental ones.
• Participants identified critical gaps in mine closure transitions, specifically a lack of knowledge and the failure to include closure issues in investment discussions. They proposed that closure planning be a prerequisite for mining investments, supported by adequate financial resources to cover costs.
• The IGF conducted evaluations of the implementation of its Mining Policy Framework in three pilot countries: the Dominican Republic, Uganda, and Madagascar. Additionally, an analysis of the mining sector's contribution to local water, energy, and food security was performed in Suriname, resulting in a tool for replication in other regions.
• The IGF expanded its membership to 54 countries following the admission of France, Germany, the Netherlands, the Islamic Republic of Iran, and Rwanda.
