• Green bonds are defined by the 'green' designation of the proceeds, which must be used for specific green projects or assets regardless of whether the issuing company itself is considered green. Funds can be used for existing assets, such as operational solar power plants, or future capital investments provided they are fully allocated within two years. For financial institutions, green loans providing funding for these investment categories may also qualify.
• There is a significant opportunity for 're-labeling' in China, as $164 billion of outstanding government debt is used for green assets, primarily in railways and renewable energy. Examples of large-scale green bonds include a $995 million bond issued by China Datang Renewable Energy Co. in June 2014 for solar projects, a $973 million bond by Yalong River Hydropower Development Co. for water conservancy, and a $628 million bond by China Guodian Technology and Environment Group for renewable energy projects.
