Gender and Local Content in the Mining Sector: Training for WIMOWA

This meeting report describes a remote training workshop held on November 23–24, 2022, by the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) for members of Women in Mining of West Africa (WIMOWA). The workshop focused on gender equality and local content in the mining sector, specifically addressing women's participation in direct employment and local procurement.

• The IGF conducted a needs assessment survey with 10 participants from Guinea, Togo, Benin, and Niger to design the training. The results showed varying levels of knowledge regarding gender, women's employment, and local content, with participants specifically requesting tools to increase women's presence in direct and indirect employment and support for women's participation in decision-making.
• The workshop, which included 30 participants from 12 WIMOWA countries, identified several cross-cutting barriers to women's access to local content benefits. These include sociocultural expectations, a higher share of unpaid work for women, limited access to financial services, and the need for better training, mentorship, and support mechanisms for female entrepreneurship.
• Participants identified several action points to improve women's inclusion in the mining sector, emphasizing a multisectoral approach involving government, civil society, and mining enterprises. Key recommendations included changing the mining work environment to be more inclusive, providing training for direct and indirect employment, and establishing policy frameworks to accompany measures for women's participation in local procurement.
• Post-workshop feedback from 15 participants indicated high satisfaction, with 93% of respondents agreeing that the program improved their capacity regarding gender in local content. Participants expressed a desire for future capacity building focused on peer learning and the sharing of success stories and case studies on women's inclusion in mining.
