Gender and Local Content in the Mining Sector: Training for WIMOWA

The IGF conducted a hybrid training workshop on November 23–24, 2022, for 30 participants from 12 WIMOWA countries. The training focused on integrating gender equality into local content policies, specifically addressing women's access to direct employment and local procurement. Participants identified the need for multisectoral approaches, policy frameworks, and support mechanisms for female entrepreneurship to overcome sociocultural and financial barriers. Post-workshop feedback indicated that 93% of respondents felt their capacity on gender in local content was enhanced.

• The training was designed based on a needs assessment of participants from Guinea, Togo, Benin, and Niger, which revealed varying levels of knowledge on gender concepts and a desire for concrete tools to increase women's presence in direct and indirect employment.
• Participants identified several critical barriers and requirements for improving women's participation in the mining sector, including the need for policy frameworks to support local procurement and the creation of support mechanisms for female entrepreneurship, mentorship, and access to financial services.
• The workshop concluded that a multisectoral approach involving government, civil society, and mining enterprises is necessary to enable more women to enter the mining sector and create local jobs.
• The training was well-received by the 30 participants from 12 WIMOWA countries, with 93% of the 15 respondents agreeing that the program enhanced their capacity regarding gender in local content.
