Manitobans’ Views Regarding Boreal Forest Conservation

The report presents survey results from 1,015 Manitoba adults on boreal forest conservation. It finds that while a majority support a balance between development and conservation, there is a strong preference for protecting the bulk of the forest, with 63% believing the province should protect more than 50% of its boreal forests. Trust in conservation organizations is high, while trust in government and industry is low. Most respondents prioritize clean air, water, and wildlife conservation over resource extraction like mining and logging.

• Manitobans' knowledge of the ecological value of the boreal forest is limited. While 58% know most of the province's boreal forest is intact, only 40% are aware it contains one-third of the world's unfrozen fresh water and only 20% know it stores twice as much carbon as the Amazon rainforest.
• There is a high level of trust in conservation organizations (44% very trustworthy) and a significant lack of trust in government and industry. Only 11% trust the provincial government, 7% trust the federal government, and 6% trust industry to act in the best interests of the boreal forest.
