ACCESSING AND USING CLIMATE DATA AND INFORMATION IN FRAGILE, DATA-POOR STATES
Summary
This report provides guidance for peacebuilding practitioners in fragile states on accessing and using climate data to manage risks. - When local ground-station data are missing, satellite-derived data and models can fill gaps. Available resources include the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP), the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM), and MODIS for land-surface temperature and vegetation indices.
- The process for rebuilding national climate station networks in fragile states, as demonstrated in Sierra Leone, involves four key steps: site selection based on WMO guidelines, system design and procurement (preferring automatic stations), comprehensive technical training, and supervised installation.
- Integrating climate risks into peacebuilding is critical because decisions regarding the control and use of freshwater, productive land, and forests have immediate and long-term impacts on livelihoods and stability.
