Migration and Conservation: A toolkit for conservation and development practitioners

The Migration and Conservation Toolkit is a guide designed to help conservation and development practitioners assess and manage the impacts of human migration on critical ecosystems, particularly in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

• The Migration and Conservation Toolkit serves as a non-prescriptive roadmap to help practitioners understand migration dynamics and design interventions that are sensitive to how human migration affects livelihoods, natural resource use, and biodiversity within host communities.
• Human migration is a significant driver of land conversion and the overexploitation of key natural resources in the Bale Mountains ecosystem, which negatively impacts both traditional livelihoods and conservation efforts.
• The toolkit was developed based on research conducted in three critical ecosystems within the Great Lakes region of Africa, supported by funding from the MacArthur Foundation.
