Submission to the OECD Public Consultation on Possible Positive Contributions of Investment Agreements to Achieving Climate and Environmental Goals

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) submitted a contribution to the OECD's public consultation on aligning investment agreements with climate and environmental goals, proposing reforms to investor transparency, responsible business conduct, and the removal of barriers to green investment.

• IISD proposes that reformed investment treaties can be used to advance climate and environmental goals by increasing transparency and accountability in project governance, establishing shared norms and principles for the green transition, mandating responsible business conduct from foreign investors, and enabling cross-border cooperation to increase climate investment.
• The submission's recommendations are based on IISD's research, including a consultation on rethinking investment treaties that gathered over 50 contributions from diverse sectors including governments, academia, and the private sector, as well as insights from 16 annual Investment Policy Forums for negotiators and policy-makers from developing countries.
