Summary of the 2022 International Institute for Sustainable Development Canadian Prairie Water Retention Monitoring and Modelling Workshop

This report summarizes a virtual workshop hosted by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) on June 23, 2022, which focused on monitoring and modelling for water retention projects in the Canadian Prairies. The event brought together 20 participants from government, non-governmental organizations, academia, and industry to share research and identify collaboration opportunities to advance water retention science and business case development.

• There is a consensus on the necessity for more comprehensive and continued monitoring of water retention within the Canadian Prairies, alongside opportunities to improve the engineering, management, and quantification of the primary and co-benefits of these systems.
• Modern technologies, specifically spectral sensors, are being utilized to improve the current state of water retention modelling and monitoring. This includes a range of research from historical data, such as that from the Watershed Evaluation of Beneficial Management Practices (WEBs) program, to current technological applications.
• The workshop highlighted specific regional projects, including the use of the Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) methodology for Pelly's Lake and Stephenfield Reservoir in Manitoba, a pilot project for adaptive monitoring using high-frequency sensors in the Winnipeg River basin, and the use of open data to target environmental 'hotspots' in Manitoba's agricultural regions.
