Sustainable Development and China: Recommendations for the Forestry, Cotton and E-products Sectors

This document introduces the first phase of the Global Markets Project, a joint initiative between the International Institute for Sustainable Development and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) designed to transition Chinese supply chains toward a sustainable business paradigm.

• China is projected to become the world's largest economy by 2030, providing a unique opportunity to redefine its trading relationships and manufacturing base based on sustainable development principles, provided it receives cooperation and support from trading partners.
• The Global Markets Project, a collaboration between the International Institute for Sustainable Development and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), seeks to identify practical strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of China's growth by moving key supply chains from "business as usual" to a "sustainable business" paradigm.
• The report analyzes the social and environmental impacts of the E-product, cotton, and forestry supply chains in China, offering recommendations to help the Chinese government achieve its "harmonious society" (HeXieSheHui) objective by using market forces to encourage sustainable trade, consumption, and production.
