Small-Scale Social-Environmental Enterprises in the Green Economy: Supporting grassroots innovation

A study of 1,300 social and environmental enterprises in developing countries indicates that while these micro enterprises use new business models to serve their communities, their growth is limited by barriers including lack of research and technology support, gender inequality, financial viability issues, and complex partnerships.

• A three-year study of 1,300 social and environmental enterprises in developing countries shows that these entities employ new business models to create products and services for their communities.
• The scale-up of grassroots micro enterprises is obstructed by several factors: gender barriers, lack of access to technology and research support, difficulties with financial viability, progress monitoring, and complex partnerships.
