The Internet and Canada's Future: Opportunities and Challenges

This document describes the inaugural process of the Canadian Internet Forum (CIF), which took place from November 2010 to February 2011 to explore the public interest in the development and use of the Internet in Canada. The text also contains unrelated snippets regarding the use of dogs to detect oil spills under ice, a Parliamentary Budget Officer warning about the costs of a carbon capture tax credit, and the need for water infrastructure to mitigate climate change risks.

• The Canadian Internet Forum (CIF), held between November 2010 and February 2011, identified a consensus among stakeholders that the Internet's pervasive economic, social, and cultural impacts create a strong public interest in its future development and use within Canada.
• The CIF process highlighted the necessity for a public forum to articulate public interest in the Internet by analyzing impacts, discussing challenges, identifying required actions from government, civil society, and the private sector, and increasing awareness among the public and decision-makers.
• The Parliamentary Budget Officer estimates that the carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) investment tax credit will cost $5.7 billion between 2022-28, which is $1 billion more than the $4.6 billion forecast by Finance Canada.
