A statement from the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) regarding the conclusion of the resumed fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2), which ended without an agreement to end plastic pollution.

• The resumed fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) concluded in Geneva on August 15 without reaching an agreement to end plastic pollution. The talks failed to secure agreement on essential measures, including fair financing arrangements, the phase-out of chemicals of concern and harmful products, and binding commitments regarding sustainable consumption and production.
• A political compromise was blocked because certain countries advocated for a treaty scope limited to waste management and recycling, whereas others argued for action across the entire life cycle of plastics, from production to consumption.
