The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) reports that the INC-5.2 negotiations in Geneva concluded without an agreement on a global plastics treaty. The failure is attributed to disagreements over the treaty's scope, specifically whether to focus only on recycling and waste management or to address the full life cycle of plastics, including production and consumption.

• The resumed fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) ended without an agreement to end plastic pollution, failing to reach consensus on binding commitments for sustainable production and consumption, the phase-out of harmful products and chemicals, and financing arrangements.
• A political compromise was blocked by some countries that argued the treaty should be limited to waste management and recycling rather than covering the entire life cycle of plastics from production to consumption.
