G20 Coal Subsidies: India

This briefing tracks coal subsidies in India for 2016-2017 and reports that while subsidies for renewable energy and electric vehicles more than doubled in FY 2022, fossil fuel support remains four times higher than clean energy support.

• A study by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) found that subsidies for electric vehicles and renewable energy in India more than doubled in FY 2022, though the government must maintain this momentum to achieve climate targets.
• While the gap between fossil fuel and clean energy support narrowed between FY 2021 and FY 2022, India still provided four times more support to fossil fuels than to clean energy in FY 2022. In FY 2021, the support for fossil fuels was nine times greater than that for clean energy.
