Fitting the Pieces of the Puzzle

This briefing discusses the increasing implementation of due diligence regulations, primarily by Global North governments, to ensure sustainability and human rights within global value chains. • Governments, particularly in the Global North, are increasingly adopting due diligence regulations over the last 20 years to promote environmental standards, human rights, and responsible business conduct, though these evolving standards may be difficult for actors in the Global South to meet.
• The drive to embed sustainability-related standards in global value chain operations has been spurred by specific disasters and environmental issues, including the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh, a garment factory fire in Pakistan, and high deforestation rates associated with export-commodity production in forest-rich nations.
