LIMBUA Group Limited

This case study evaluates the compliance of LIMBUA Group Limited, a Kenyan fruit and nut processing and marketing enterprise, with the Committee on World Food Security’s Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (CFS-RAI).

• LIMBUA Group Limited is a small and medium-sized enterprise in Kenya's fruit and nut sector that sources products from local farmers with organic and Fairtrade certifications. The company provides advisory services to these farmers regarding organic production techniques and good agricultural practices for crops intended for local markets and home consumption.
• The company is supported by the impact investor Incofin through the Smallholder Safety Net Up-scaling Programme (SSNUP), which aims to improve food security, living standards, and climate-smart farming practices in developing countries.
• An analysis of seven key dimensions shows that LIMBUA demonstrates a high level of compliance with the CFS-RAI principles. This performance is attributed to the company's innovative business model, clear goal-setting, and strategic stakeholder engagement.
• Despite high compliance, the study identifies areas for improvement, including the need for LIMBUA to enhance employee understanding of organic farming and assist farmers with seasonal cash flow issues. Additionally, it suggests that investors provide more capital to facilitate the company's diversification and expansion.
• LIMBUA faces operational challenges including climate-related production uncertainties, difficulties accessing local finance, and competition for farmer crops.
