Indicator Preferences in National Reporting of Progress Toward the Sustainable Development Goals

The document analyzes the SDG indicators used in voluntary reviews from nine countries, comparing them to the global framework developed by the UN Statistical Division. It recommends that countries strengthen reporting capacities using existing systems, complement global metrics with national ones where gaps exist, and ensure reporting covers challenging areas like sustainable consumption and production rather than only convenient metrics.

• The study suggests three preliminary recommendations for national SDG reporting: countries should enhance reporting capacities based on existing measurement systems while following UNSD global guidance, supplement global metrics with national ones for specific local issues when global metrics are absent, and ensure indicators cover difficult areas such as sustainable consumption and production to avoid 'blank spots' caused by entrenched interests.
