Comprehensive Wealth in Ethiopia

This report analyzes Ethiopia's comprehensive wealth from 1992 to 2020, arguing that capital assets—human, natural, produced, financial, and social—are more accurate measures of economic progress than GDP. While Ethiopia's comprehensive wealth grew significantly over the study period, recent trends show a decline in real per capita wealth and increasing environmental pressures.

• Ethiopia's comprehensive wealth grew at an average annual rate of 3.3% between 1995 and 2020, with real comprehensive wealth per capita doubling and growing annually at 3% during this period. Human capital was the primary driver, accounting for 50% to 65% of total wealth.
• There is a misalignment between GDP contribution and produced capital allocation in Ethiopia; while agriculture contributes approximately 40% of GDP, it only receives 8% of produced capital. Produced capital is instead concentrated in the manufacturing sector, which represented 4% of GDP in 2022.
• Recent data indicates a reversal of growth trends, with real per capita comprehensive wealth declining in 2018/19 and 2019/20. Additionally, precipitation, temperature, and land use indicators suggest increasing climate and ecosystem pressures.
