New Tech, New Deal: Mining policy options in the face of new technology

This report examines the impact of digitization, big data, and automation on the global mining sector and proposes policy options to maintain good governance and social balance as the industry transitions.

• The global mining sector is undergoing a transition driven by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, utilizing technologies like digitization, big data, and automation to create operations that are more connected, information-rich, and efficient in their use of inputs and labour.
• While new technologies can lead to fewer workplace accidents and more climate-friendly operations, they may also reduce local employment and the procurement of local goods and services, particularly impacting those living closest to mine sites.
• The shift toward automation threatens the traditional social contract between mining companies, host countries, and local communities, as employment and procurement are often the most critical forms of value provided to poorer, less diversified economies.
