Designing Effective REDD+ Safeguard Information Systems: Building on existing systems and country experiences

This policy brief discusses the development of Safeguard Information Systems (SIS) for REDD+, emphasizing that these systems can be built upon existing national and international architectures rather than requiring entirely new mechanisms.

• Effective safeguard information systems (SIS) are critical for REDD+ success as they promote transparency, prevent unintended social and environmental harms, and track the impact of REDD+ actions.
• Research indicates that providing information on the respect and addressing of safeguards does not strictly require the creation of new indicators, methodologies, or mechanisms. Instead, there are opportunities to utilize existing architecture, such as national legislation, bilateral and multilateral agreements, international agreement reporting processes, and REDD+ pilot-level initiatives.
• The research supporting this brief utilized a desk study, regional expert meetings, and semi-structured interviews with practitioners, specifically examining eight existing information systems and early actions taken in Ethiopia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Vietnam.
