G20 Coal Subsidies: Tracking government support to a fading industry

This report by the International Institute for Sustainable Development tracks the progress of G20 countries in phasing out subsidies for coal production and consumption, including coal-fired power, by examining fiscal support, public finance, and state-owned enterprise investment.

• G20 countries are responsible for 79 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and committed in 2009 to phase out fossil fuel subsidies in the medium term.
• Despite their 2009 commitment, G20 governments spend at least USD 63.9 billion annually on coal subsidies and have failed to fully define or document the extent of these subsidies.
