G20 Coal Subsidies: Tracking government support to a fading industry

The report tracks G20 nations' efforts to phase out coal subsidies, finding that despite a 2009 commitment, these governments continue to spend at least USD 63.9 billion annually on coal and have failed to fully document the extent of this support.

• G20 countries are responsible for 79 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions and committed in 2009 to phase out fossil fuel subsidies in the medium term.
• Ten years after their commitment, G20 governments spend at least USD 63.9 billion per year on coal subsidies and have not properly defined or documented the total amount of subsidies provided.
